From the outset, the CMIT 5 set a new standard for tube-type shotgun microphones. Its directivity increases exceptionally smoothly with frequency, resulting in an unusually balanced sound signature. Furthermore, the level rolls off particularly gently and independently of frequency to the side of the 0° axis. This allows for the neutral recording of localized events, and minor errors in boom positioning are forgiven. The CMIT 5 has a more directional pickup pattern than one would expect from a microphone of its length. It is also used for music recordings, for example in opera, where a stronger directivity is required (e.g., in confined spaces).

The sound of the CMIT 5 remains unchanged when the microphone is rotated around its longitudinal axis, because its polar diagram is the same in the vertical and horizontal directions (rotational symmetry).

Three filters can be activated by pressing buttons that can be operated without tools, allowing the CMIT 5 to be adapted to the recording situation:

  • The high-frequency boost (+5dB at 10kHz) improves speech intelligibility and compensates for the attenuation caused by windscreens.
  • A steep-sided low-frequency filter (18dB/Oct. from 80Hz) suppresses low-frequency wind and fishing noise.
  • A gently sloping bass roll-off (6dB/Oct. from 300Hz) compensates for the proximity effect.

LEDs next to each button indicate the filter's operating status. This makes it easy to see, even in the dark, whether the microphone is on and which filters are active. The settings are retained after switching off the device.

The capsule (= acoustic transducer) and the microphone amplifier are not separable in the CMIT 5.
